Track Slack with Yoke

Yoke.io uses Slack APIs to report on key metrics such as the number of unread messages in a channel.

About the integration

Yoke uses OAuth2 and secure REST APIs to connect to Slack.

Card Types

You can track the following measures in your Slack account:

  • Unread messages in a channel
  • Unread messages in a group
  • Unread direct messages to a user
  • Starred messages

Alerting logic

A machine learning algorithm figures out how often you reset your Slack card in Yoke and warns you if you haven't read a channel/group for longer than usual.

Automatic bookmarks in Chrome

The Yoke Auto-Bookmarks Extension automatically creates a bookmark per Slack card with the measure and the title of the card, such as "21 unread messages in #general". The bookmark points to the corresponding group/channel page in Slack.

Tips for Yoke users

Notifications are disruptive interruptions that make you forget what you should be doing, i.e., unproductive. You can minimize your notifications by following these steps:

  • Classify your channels into three categories: Urgent, Informative and Amusing.
  • Urgent channels can have default settings where you get interrupted on every message.
  • Informative channels must have notification preferences set to "Mentions of my name ...".
  • Mute amusing channels. This will remove distracting change counts from these channels. You can read them at your convenience.

You can track informative channels with Yoke. You don't need Yoke to track urgent channels since you will receive notifications.

Always use a mention if you want someone to look at your message.

Slack is for communication not reference

Slack integrations are helpful in getting everyone on the same page. But channels and chat messages are not the best way to organize information or tasks. A comment that belongs in the source system, like Asana, JIRA, or Zendesk, must not remain a message in Slack.

For the same reason, important conversations in Slack must be summarized in an app that promotes better organization and tracking, such as a project management system or Wiki.
